September 2010 "People of Spectrum Generations"
Doug and Rita Sukeforth
If you want to know what a “best friend” to a homebound senior looks like, then just take a look at Doug and Rita Sukeforth – long time supporters of Spectrum Generations and, in particular, our Meals on Wheels program. Doug and Rita have raised tens of thousands of dollars with special events like their Pig Roast and annual golf tournament. But now they have taken their generosity to a whole new level to help us reach a time sensitive goal to raise funds to add additional parking space at Spectrum Generations Muskie Community Center in Waterville. A lack of good parking at Spectrum Generations Muskie Community Center has been a on-going problem with no good solution – until now! Longtime neighbors of the Muskie Center offered to sell their property to us so they can move near their family in Bangor – but that left Spectrum Generations with the problem of raising the money to purchase the property within a short period of time. Thanks to a challenge gift from Doug and Rita Sukeforth, the Muskie Parking Project will be successful. Doug and Rita Sukeforth agreed to donate half the purchase price for the neighboring property if Spectrum Generations could raise the other half through fundraising. Because Doug and Rita made their gift a CHALLENGE, every dollar donated is doubled in value. For 30 years, seniors from the Waterville region have depended on the Muskie Center’s nutritional, caregiving, fitness, and social activities. And every year, thousands of home-bound seniors and disabled adults rely on the Muskie Center’s team of staff and volunteer drivers who prepare, package and deliver more than 90,000 Meals On Wheels annually in Kennebec, Somerset and Waldo Counties. The lack of parking at Muskie has been an obstacle for seniors, disabled adults, staff and volunteers and seriously hampers our Meals On Wheels drivers because of cramped space in the loading area. The Sukeforth’s generous donation (and strong leadership donations from Ken and Shirley Eskelund and a host of generous friends), was just the boost Spectrum Generations needed to solve Muskie’s parking woes. Over the past month, Spectrum Generations raised the majority of the funds needed to meet the Sukeforth’s challenge, but we still need help to raise the final dollars. Will you make your best possible donation to help us solve the parking problem at Muskie? Remember – every dollar is worth two dollars in a Challenge. Thank you in advance for your support. With your help, we will permanently solve the parking problem before the snow flies! ~Donations can be mailed to the Muskie Center at 38 Gold Street in Waterville, ME 04901~ |
